December
24, 2002
Betty of Nebraska had lap RNY surgery on June 20, 2002 and has
lost 100 pounds. Betty says, "It is so much easier to
do the tasks that were becoming more and more physically difficult
to do. I can reach my shoes to tie them, buckle my seat
belt, and roll over in bed, without the heave and the ho to get me
started in the direction I want to roll. I am so happy that
I made the decision after much research to gain back all that my
body had stolen from me. I can now seriously consider going
to school. Before I was afraid I wouldn't fit in the desks.
Nothing can stop me now!" Congratulate Betty at Brhangel@nebi.com

Alrena of Flagstaff, AZ had open RNY surgery on Feb. 13, 2001 and
has lost 200 pounds. Alrena says, "I went from not
being able to walk and having a hard time getting around. I had 19
hernia surgeries because my stomach continued to rip. And now I am
able to walk 4 miles. I feel like I can live again. I am searching
for help now, however. I just moved to AZ and lost my support
group and am having a hard time progressing. I am stuck at
184 pounds and really need to get moving down again." If you

lost 139 pounds. Carol says, "I have my life back. I am
able to play with my nieces and nephew. I can shop and walk
and I am not in pain like I use to be. I no longer take any
medication for diabetes. I had been on two shots of U-500 insulin
plus two oral medications per day and my diabetes still wasn't in
control. I no longer have to use my C-pap machine for sleep
apnea. I no longer have to take medication for high blood
pressure. I am able to be an active participant in life.
I am no longer a spectator in this wonderful thing we call life.
Life just keeps getting better and better all the time." Say

Flora of Greenlawn, NY had lap RNY surgery on May 15, 2002 and has
lost 108 pounds. Flora says, "I couldn't be happier
with my surgery results. I finally have control over my life. I
love feeling healthy, running up a flight of stairs without
getting out of breath (no more knee pain!), dancing all night long
without sweating up a storm, fitting in the airplane seats with
room to spare. Not to mention all the shopping for sexy clothes to
show off my new figure. Extra attention from the opposite sex
doesn't hurt either. Most of all I love realizing success after
what seemed like a lifetime of failures." Congratulate Flora

December

Susie of Swartz Creek, MI had open RNY surgery on Oct. 15, 2001
and has lost 125 pounds. Susie says, "It has been so
wonderful to have the energy to play with my 10 grandchildren, and
keep up with my grown children when we go shopping. Being able to
fit in a booth when we go out to eat, being able to buy small
clothes that my girls think are cool is beyond what I could ever
have dreamed possible. I have gone from 278 pounds to 155 and from
size 26 to a 12 and some l0's. My only regret is that I didn't
have it done years ago so I wouldn't have gone thru so much
heartache. It is still a choice everyday what I eat and the
surgery is only a tool, but a wonderful help to my life. God Bless
all of you in your journey. Susie (Nancy Meriwether)." Say

Patty from Olympia, WA had open RNY surgery on April 11, 2002 and
has lost 110 pounds. Patty says, "I have been simply amazed at
the difference this surgery has made in my life. I never
dreamed that I would have the energy to play with my kids again.
My husband tells me that I "float" around the house. My kids
are loving the "new" mom that they have never had. They can
put their arms around me and overlap their arms. They are
amazed because they couldn't even touch the tips of their fingers
around me before. I am so thankful for this surgery and only
wish that I would have gotten it done sooner. I can't wait to
hit goal (45 pounds to go)."

Jodi had RNY surgery on Aug. 9, 2002 and has lost 100 pounds.
Jodi says, "I had my surgery on August 9, 2002. It's
been a tough road, but I can finally say that I'm glad to be on
the "other side." I've been able to go Christmas
shopping for the first time in ten years. It's an
unbelievable feeling. I enjoy those who correspond with me
and compare notes. It really helps to have that little push
by people in my same position. Keep them coming. I'll try to
help the new patients with the experience I have had so far.
Remember, take your vitamins. I haven't lost a hair from my
head. I've got more energy to do things around the house
instead of farming out the chores. If you would like to contact me
my e-mail address is reddog@northnet.org.
Take care and we'll have a big party all on the other side.
Love ya all....Jodi"
Update:
I had my gastric
bypass surgery on August 9, 2002. I have gone from a size 24W to
a child's size 12-14. I love the freedom that I have now. I can
do so much more with my family. The surgery has given my children
back their mother. I've had my bumps along the way but overall
I'm feeling fantastic. I would love to correspond with those that
have had successes and those waiting for surgery. If you would
like to correspond with me you can e-mail me at

Edwina had lap RNY surgery on July 8, 2001 and has lost 200
pounds. Edwina says, "I have self confidence, I'm not
ashamed of myself anymore. I feel great and look better.
Shopping is wonderful. I've gone from a size 28 slack to a
size 6 jean. I do Jazzercise and have from Aug. 2001 and believe
the exercise has made all the difference in my rapid arrival at my
goal weight. I love the tool we have been given in this
surgery. The way it makes me do what I had no power to do on
my own. I have started a business, Wholly Grounds Coffee Bar
and Olive Branch 2. It is a Christian bookstore in my home town.
I believe the weight loss and confidence have helped me be a
success in this wonderful new endeavor. My customers ask how
I stay so thin with all the goodies I keep in the shop. They
have no idea how unappealing the goodies are to me now. I
can turn up my nose at cheesecake and rich foods because I don't
like getting sick, I love the aversion that the surgery has given
me. I love my life and my new life style." Congratulate

Mary of Chazy, NY had open RNY surgery on Feb. 25, 2002 and has
lost 105 pounds. Mary says, "I cannot begin to say how
much this surgery has changed my life. It was a rough road.
I had a serious complication and needed to go back into surgery 5
days later. Even with this and a longer recuperation time, 8
months later and 105 pounds lighter I still would go through it
all over again! As a morbidly obese person you live under a
black cloud of societal prejudice and self condemnation, never
mind all of the physical disabilities and humiliation you suffer
through. It was something I chose to do for me for my 40th
birthday and will never regret it. I did lose my best friend
and comforter (food!) but regained my life!" Say hello to

pounds and gaining. My type 2 diabetes was way out of control; 5
shots a day and no control, completely insulin resistant.
Now after a 100 pound loss I take 1 pill a day. I was
exercising before but gaining weight. Now I am 20 pounds
from goal and sink to the bottom of the pool when I exercise.
I walk, walk and walk...and everyone thinks I look great.
The energy I have now really is something else. Life is

Laurie of Warrensburg, MO had open RNY surgery on Jan. 15. 2002
and has lost 130 pounds. Laurie says, "In the nine
months since my surgery, I have lost 130 pounds, and it has been a
life saving miracle! Before surgery I had congestive heart
failure and was on oxygen, was in a scooter because my heart could
not handle the stress it was under just hauling around the excess
weight, and I had to take more than 11 different medications a day
just to stay alive, only THAT was stressing my liver! Now I
am down to 4 meds a day, and just went to a Halloween party where
I danced all night as a sexy little saloon girl with a 26 inch
waist!!! I am no longer on oxygen and can do things I have
been unable to do for years! I am down from size a 26 to
11/12's and even a few 9/10's! People who've known me for
years but have not seen me since prior to the surgery do not even
recognize me now and are floored when they find out it's really
me! In spite of all this however, I find that I had unrealistic
expectations that this would be the panacea for all my ills, and I
find I still have severe self-esteem issues I need to work on that
weight loss alone can never cure. So the journey
continues...but I am much further along and in much better health
to make this journey toward wellness of mind and body." Send

Anita of Harriman, TN had Duodenal Switch surgery on Jan. 25, 2002
and has lost 123 pounds. Anita says, " I told a friend
the other day that if I was dreaming, please don't ever wake me
up. I used to sit and dream and cry that I could lose
weight. I have been overweight all of my life and with every diet
I would lose a few pounds and gain back more than I lost. This
surgery has completely changed my life. I can do my own
shopping now. I don't have to send my sister for me. I look
for reasons to go out now, not reasons to stay home. I had the
surgery on January 25th and I have lost 123 pounds as of 11/3/02.
I started out at 362 pounds and wore a size 34. I can now wear a
size 20, some even 18's. Life is great. I can buy clothes in
almost any store now. I can sit in booths at restaurants. I can
walk and breath at the same time and I don't sweat hardly at all
anymore. THANK YOU JESUS for sending this surgery to me as
an answer to my prayer. I would recommend it to anyone who has a
similar story to those of us listed here. God bless. Write me at gracilou@msn.com

has lost 104 pounds. Sharon says, "How has my life
changed? Can I count the ways? There's so many, it's hard to
list. I guess the most noticeable to me is that 6 months ago

trouble getting down and was hardly able to get up myself much
less lift the baby out. I'm no longer on blood pressure
medication, diabetes medication, or medication for depression.

never had before. I play sports with my kids. I no longer plan
activities based on whether or not I will fit into a chair. I've
dropped from a size 28/30W to a 16W. Most of all - I like myself
again. My husband and children have been completely supportive and
keep encouraging me to exercise and lose weight. I only have

Susan of Nottingham, PA had lap RNY surgery on Dec. 3, 2001 and
has lost 125 pounds. Susan says, "This may seem strange
but I am soon to be 45 and now that I have lost this weight I feel
like I am 18 again and that I had been in a coma or something.
I feel like I have finally awakened! Life is good. I can
walk and breathe at the same time. I couldn't stand for more
than five minutes before and now I can not to mention crossing my
knees! My health is so much better! People everywhere
are asking me how? Then when I share-the next question is,
"Are you okay?" I have been blessed. I had no
complications. My weight loss is slow compared to many
people out there but I am so thankful for this weight loss and
another chance to get it right. I think I am more careful
now of all that I eat. I am either cursed or blessed being able to
eat sugar. I sort of wish I couldn't. I am walking each day
or working out in some way, but this is only recently. I am so
thankful to God and to my surgeon for being this healthy again.
I had high blood pressure, bad knees, bad back, fibromyalgia and
some days it was too hard to get out of bed. I look at
pictures from before and wonder, who was that??? I am happy where
I am now and can't wait to see the finished project! Thank
