Before / After
|
June 21, 2002
Nancy of Philomath, OR had lap RNY surgery on Aug. 31, 2001
and has lost 125 pounds. Nancy says, "This surgery has
been a fantastic thing for me. Before my surgery I
weighed 310 pounds and didn't have any energy. I
didn't have many interests, and didn't want to be seen by
anyone. I hated my picture being taken and was not
interested in meeting new people. I worked 24 hours a
week at work and was exhausted with that. Now I work
more than 40 hours a week and have so much energy. I
have had no complications and am grateful for that. I
eat anything I want, and amazingly enough I don't crave the
junk food that I once loved. I am 30 pounds to goal
and am excited to reach that. I have started traveling
a lot and even have started dating men again. What a
big difference. I am happy with the way I look and
others treat me quite differently. Life is on the
upswing finally and I see a future bright and
wonderful." Congratulate Nancy on her wonderful
new life at rosepetll@attbi.com

BJ Lester
|
June 19, 2002
BJ of Henderson, NV had surgery on Nov. 1, 2001 and has lost
124 pounds. BJ says, "I began my surgery weighing 412
pounds. I am now down to 288 and loving it. I am
looking forward to losing the next 124 pounds. Before
my surgery I could barely walk (a few steps and I was barely
able to catch my breath), I had high blood pressure, and my
knees and ankles were killing me. I was also borderline
diabetic. Now I can walk long distances without losing
my breath, my blood pressure is normal and no more diabetes.
I was hit by a car in 1984 and have damage to my lower back
and hips. This weight loss has made it much easier for
me to get around and has reduced the amount of pain I suffer
from my injuries and resulting arthritis. I am much
more confident about myself and feel better about myself.
This has allowed me to be more open and enjoy myself more in
social situations. I still have a long way to go, but
I have come a long way so far." Congratulate BJ at BJoLester@cs.com

Carole McMarlin
|
June 19, 2002
Carole of Pittsburgh, PA had her RNY surgery Jan. 15, 2002
and has lost 101 pounds. Carole says, "This
surgery has really made a big difference in my life. I
can now do physical activities that I could not do before,
even simple things like climbing a flight of stairs with a
laundry basket, or walking through a mall, or standing at my
sink washing dishes. All of these simple things that
so many people take for granted, I was unable to do with
ease before my surgery. I can now sit on the floor and
get back up, and cross my legs and do so many other things
that I haven't been able to do in years. I still have
about 80 pounds more to lose, but I'm not too concerned
about a goal weight as much as a goal size. I have
been in a size 34 or 4X for a few years now and I am now
into a size 22, sometimes a 20. My goal is to be rid
of the plus sizes. I will be happy being in a size 14
or lower. My best friend and I started on this road together
and I got to have my surgery first. She had hers on
March 20th, 2002 and is down 50 pounds, so far. It's
great to have someone to go through this process with."

was a diabetic and had high blood pressure and was on
medication for both. I have been off my diabetes
medication since a week before surgery and off the blood
pressure medication since about 3 months after surgery.
I am able to do so MANY things that I could not do before
the surgery like fit in chairs with arms, cross my legs, fit
in booths in restaurants, WALK without pain or getting out
of breath...the list goes on and on! I've also been
able to go back to work and love it!" Congratulate

Norma Guerra

June 6, 2002
Norma of Kingsville, TX had lap RNY surgery on Aug. 29, 2001
and has lost 134 pounds. Norma says, "Before my
life-saving surgery, I could hardly walk for 5 minutes. Now,
I walk up to 1.5 hours and have to force myself to stop and
not over do it. Before, I used my rescue inhaler at least
twice daily. Now, I haven't used it since surgery. Before
surgery my blood pressure was out of control and I was on
medication. Now it's normal without medications. Now I can
cross my legs, walk without getting winded or tired, have
lots of energy, confidence, and fit into regular size
clothes (not women's). I can feel my ribs, I can now dream
of becoming a mom someday and know that now I have a real
chance at it. Now I AM living instead of just
existing. I'm not on the side-line of life anymore. I'm in
the game and WINNING!!!" Rejoice with Norma at nguerra2@yahoo.com

and has lost 105 pounds. Sheri says, "My life has
changed so much by losing weight. I just spent 4 days
in Las Vegas and walked all over. Last year I would
have sat in one Casino because it hurt to walk. I was
too busy seeing everything to even do any gambling. I
am able to play and spend time doing fun things with my
daughter. We play softball, volleyball, soccer and I
even go swimming with my daughter now. I used to sit
in the car to watch my daughter's soccer games so she
wouldn't have to be embarrassed of her mom but now I'm on
the field cheering her on. I wish I would have had
this surgery years ago". Send congratulations to Sheri

many ways that this surgery and subsequent weight loss has

Bolder Boulder Marathon on Memorial Day! Can you imagine?
My previous difficulties with asthmas are nonexistent.
I can play with my children. I can sit in movie
seats...and have room left on either side of me on the seat!
I can wear "normal" clothes. The list goes

my attitude towards life, and has made me a better person to
understand things around me. I was isolated, and did not
want to go out in public, due to my excessive weight.
I didn't feel comfortable wearing stretch pants, and a long
big shirt. I wanted to wear something tight and feel

thank GOD and my Doctor Hilmy for doing that, and changing
my whole outlook on life. I cut down half of myself,
literally speaking." Celebrate with Olinda at dosprimosauto@aol.com

Jan Markowitz
|
May 19, 2002
Jan of Aurora, CO had open RNY surgery performed on Jan. 25,
2002 and has lost 107.5 pounds. Jan says, "Before
surgery I didn't have a "life". With the
exception of going to work, I became a recluse in my house.
I couldn't breathe and walk at the same time; I couldn't
stand longer than 5 minutes without my feet and my hips
hurting; I couldn't even go to the supermarket without
horrendous pain in my knees. I fell asleep regularly
at work in, front of the computer---I'm lucky I still have a
job! Although I still have another 107 lbs to loose, I
have an amazing amount of energy; my sleep apnea is gone as
is my stress incontinence; I can actually stand and have a
lengthy conversation with someone without being in
tremendous pain; and best of all, I can now SHOP my little
heart out! My husband and adult children, who have
been wonderfully supportive, are very proud of my progress.
I saw my niece tonight (she was away at college) for the
first time since before surgery, and she screamed,
"You're so tiny!!" What a great feeling to
have my life back! Dr. Snyder is the most fantastic
and compassionate man I have ever met." Send your best

Gloria Little
|
May 19, 2002
Gloria of Sault Ste. Marie, MI had open RNY surgery on July
10, 2001 and has lost about 140 pounds. Gloria says,
"My life is wonderful. I would have surgery again
in a minute. I'm not saying it's been easy, but it has
been a journey of discovery. I thought that the
surgery wouldn't change me that much but I have changed.
I have major confidence and do not allow people to walk over
me. It was so easy to hide behind the weight and allow
everyone else to think and do things I knew I didn't like.
My husband has stated that he really likes this new wife.
She is parts of the old one with new parts added that make
an awesome lady. I have taken an active role in my
trade union at work. I am going to workshops and
loving it. I am now a force to be reckoned with-LOL.
I am enjoying my life so much. My granddaughter Jesse
will never know a Grandma who couldn't play with her.
I am back, the girl who loves life and now wants to be an
active participant in all things. If you are
considering WLS one word of advice I would give is do your
research. My choice was right for me." Send your

Debbie of CT had open RNY surgery on July 27, 2001 and has
lost 135 pounds. Debbie says, "Since having this
surgery, which has been a blessing, I have increased my
evening and weekend activities with my children. I even went
roller skating. My confidence is even higher than what it
was before the surgery. My knees and ankles do not hurt, I
don't have shortness of breath from just getting up off
the couch. I have always enjoyed being active but when my
weight hit 357 pounds being active was not possible. Now, I
can be active again and enjoy being a part of events rather
than sitting on the sidelines watching. To all be blessed,
and stay encouraged." Say hello to Debbie at davia_p@yahoo.com

May 11, 2002
Rose, of Dayton, OH had open RNY surgery on March 19, 2001
and has lost 110 pounds. Rose says, "I have REJOINED
the human race. When I had my surgery the doctor did
run into some complicated issues, my stay was for 12 days
and I was not good for almost 6 weeks, but all that is old
news. My recovery has been phenomenal. I started
losing weight just as soon as I started walking, drinking
water by the gallon and getting in the right frame of mind.
The best thing that has happened to me since my journey
started is that I can cross my legs again. I feel like
a woman once more. My fat had taken away all of my
femininity, I felt like I was a hulk of humanity lumbering
from place to place. The good news is that along with
my 110 pound weight loss, my hubby has also had an 85 pound
loss. We have become fruit-a-holics, veg-a-holics and
walkers deluxe. Hub and I split all meals taken out of
the house, but I generally cook most of what we eat. I
am so happy and healthy, love life and all it has to offer.
Write me with any questions or comments and I will
respond." Rose's address is rmw2201@msn.com

April 30, 2002
Jennifer of Cleveland, OH had lap RNY surgery on Sept. 4,
2001 and has lost 100 pounds. Jennifer says, "I
regretted this surgery until about 2 weeks ago. I had
so many problems with swallowing it didn't seem worth it to
me. I have been slowly getting better with eating, etc. and
finally feel like I might have done the right thing by
having the surgery. I really like who I see in the
mirror now! I recently bought my first bathing suit in
18 years and I went swimming with my 3 children for the
first time. They have never seen their mother in a
bathing suit. They were so excited! I also
recently went to a carnival and rode everything without the
fear of stares and being to heavy or fat for the ride.
Although I had a falling out with my surgeon, I have found a
doctor locally who cares about me and I am very healthy.
Unfortunately Jennifer didn't include her email address.

Jenni
Before / After
|
April 29, 2002
Jenni of Marshall, MO had open RNY surgery on Aug. 27, 2001
and has lost 101 pounds. Jenni says, "At first I
couldn't say that I enjoyed making the decision because I
personally became very ill for almost three months. But now
that this is over and it has been almost eight months and I
am doing fine now. I was very pleased the first time I
sat in my bathtub and could fit without my hips touching
both sides. I actually didn't touch either side.
I was so thrilled. I called my husband in to witness
it and he just got a good chuckle out of it. My
husband made a comment to me just this week about how I woke
up, ran downstairs to get some laundry out of the dryer then
ran back upstairs to get an outfit out of my closet and he
said that he was just amazed that I did all of that running
up and down stairs without even a huff. I was so proud
and he was also. Things have definitely changed for
me. I can honestly say now that things have changed
for the good. Thanks to this surgery I am no longer a
good candidate for Diabetes or the heart trauma that runs
through my family. I am so happy to be healthy."

and has lost 125 pounds. Louise can't even begin to list all
the ways her life has changed! She feels good, feels
good about herself, and looks good. Though she'd love
to lose another 25 pounds, she'd be happy if she stayed
right where she is. She's gone from a size 28 to a
size 14/16! Louise never thought it was possible.
She never stops moving any more, rarely watches TV, and
really only reads in bed at night just before sleep.

exercising to get her fix for books as well as her fix on
exercise. Louise says life is great!!! Send Louise

Lisa A. Porter

April 28, 2002
Lisa of Ashland, KY had open RNY surgery on October 31, 2001
and has lost 100 pounds. Lisa has so much energy now, more
than she can ever remember. Before her surgery, she could do
little more than sit in a chair all day. She couldn't do her
own housecleaning or shopping unless she went to a place
that had an electric cart she could ride on. Now, she can
shop for hours on her feet, not on a cart. Lisa says
she was getting to the point that she could hardly take care
of her hygienic needs before the surgery. She had to get a
shower chair because she couldn't stand long enough to take
a shower and was too big to fit in the bathtub. She hadn't
crossed her legs in years; now she just loves sitting with
them crossed, just because she can. She feels so full of joy
now, she can hardly keep from smiling. Lisa was severely
depressed for about 13 years so this is really a big
turn-around. She has more self-confidence now which helps
her to do better in social situations. She's even helping to
start a support group. Send your best to Lisa at lisaporter1955@yahoo.com
