Sandi of Denver, CO had open RNY surgery on June 12, 2001 and has
lost 115 pounds. Sandi says, " EVERYTHING in life is
different! I can sit anywhere and fit. I fit at tables in
restaurants, in airline seats, and theater seats, and I can cross
my legs. All the things people take for granted mean so much
to people like myself who couldn't even breath without gasping. My
weight is still about 167 pounds, but if this is where I level out
then so be it for I am far better off than I was in 2001. Say

Deb of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada had open RNY surgery on July
30, 2001 and has lost 209 pounds. Deb says, "I can fit
in any chair or seat. I want to try a roller coaster now, but have
to wait for warmer weather. I'm single but I get noticed and
"hit on" by men now. I went to Florida in October 2002
by myself for some much needed R & R and one night I went out
by myself (never would have done that before being fat)and went to
a local place called Jimmy B's and I got hit on by 3 guys in one
night. Never ever happened to me before. My self esteem went
through the roof but my common sense though went down the toilet
that night. I feel invincible at times and empowered but the
attention from men is extremely welcome and wanted, but totally
overwhelming. Being fat my entire adult life so far (20 years) I
have no experience with men or dating and feel like an
inexperienced teenager, even though I'm 40. Very disheartening. I
just finished a 3 month relationship with the first man since
having this surgery and I trusted and believed him implicitly, and
felt so very close to him, but he lied to me and broke my heart.
So at least I have a little more experience now (but not the kind
I was hoping for). The surgery is great and I would recommend it
to anyone, but be prepared for not only the physical changes, but
the emotional ones too. I'm still getting used to the new me and
it isn't as easy as I'd hoped it would be, but I'm keeping my
fingers crossed that a truly honest, single and sincere man will
come my way and make the rest of my dreams come true. Say a prayer
for me please." Email Deb atmickeyc711@yahoo.ca

anywhere, stand up in my bed (ok yes I tried it). Mostly,
losing this amount of weight has given me a new outlook on life

February
25, 2003
Sheryl of Cleveland Heights, OH had open RNY surgery on Aug. 14,
2002 and has lost 107 pounds. Sheryl says, "
Considering I tried to avoid having the surgery all the way up
until I was rolled away from my family in the hospital, it has
changed my life drastically. Although I never thought of
myself as a typical bariatric patient, I stand 6'2" tall and
weighed 347 pounds. The truth is, I was a big package.
Pretty, but still very big (smile). Today, I have energy
that I had forgotten about, I run, I work out with weights, I
don't get out of breath walking up & down stairs, and I just
love to shop. I'm trying out new sports like skiing, and
tobogganing. I am also picking up old sports like
basketball. I can lift my legs to my chest when I polish my
toenails, I easily fit into airplane and theater seats, and I am
not embarrassed to get into roller coaster seats for fear that I
won't fit. I love ME! I still have about 60 more
pounds to lose, but I am truly enjoying this journey. It was
the best decision I have ever made. I'm glad that I didn't
change my mind or let others talk me out of doing it. Now, I
weigh less than a lot of those who were trying to talk me out of
having the surgery, and they are considering having it for
themselves. I am glad to be able to be their support and
inspiration." Say hello to Sheryl at slynnsmith01@adelphia.net

Ginny of Ogdensburg, NY had open DS surgery on September 19, 2002
and has lost 101 pounds. Ginny says, "I am extremely
proud to announce that in the first 4 months following my surgery,
I have lost 101 pounds. I have faced several plateaus, the most
difficult being the past 17 days. I am a diet controlled diabetic,
having been on almost 100 units of insulin, and 2 oral diabetes
medications. My other medications are either reduced to half doses
or cut. As for weight.loss, I have 60 to 80 pounds yet to lose,
but have gone from size 26/28 to18/20 & they are a little big.
I no longer walk with crutches, can stand up straight and feel so
much stronger. I am much happier too. It took me 1 1/2 years to
decide on surgery but I would do it all over in a heartbeat if
necessary. Looking forward now to DANCING at my son's wedding.
Thanks to all who provided encouragement along the journey.
Because I have quite a ways to go yet, I call my efforts
"SUCCESS IN PROGRESS." Send good wishes to Ginny at vadd@stlawrfcu.net

looking at pictures of yourself when you were in high school or

That person no longer exists! It's so freeing. I feel more
valued. I'm not invisible anymore. I can 'do' so much more
now. And I 'want' to do more now, such as shop and walk for hours,
baby-sit my darling new granddaughter, and travel on business or
for personal reasons without discomfort. Life has opened back up

"I fit in any chair, seat, stool and don't have to worry
about that. I flew to Florida in October by myself, with no
seatbelt extension or larger seat required. While there, I went
out BY MYSELF one night to a beach hotel/bar and got hit on by 3
separate men. That has never, ever happened before and I can't
describe the feelings. I ended up spending the weekend with one of
them and we are all still friends and had a great time. Too bad I
live in Canada and they all live in the USA, but it gives me hope
